Plaza Midwood sits east of Uptown, anchored by the Central Avenue commercial corridor that runs through it. The neighborhood has a longer arc of mixed-income, mixed-architecture character than most Charlotte enclaves — bungalows from the 1920s sit next to mid-century ranches, which sit next to newer custom builds and infill townhomes. That diversity makes the neighborhood read as more eclectic than NoDa or Dilworth, with a personality that resists templating.
Central Avenue is the lifeblood: independent restaurants, dive bars, music venues, vintage shops, and small businesses. Saturday foot traffic here rivals NoDa's. The neighborhood has gentrified meaningfully over the past decade, but it's held more of its diversity than the comparable redevelopment story in South End or NoDa, which tends to give Plaza Midwood a more lived-in feel.
The area is a step below Dilworth and Myers Park, which prices in a discount that buyers without kids at home often find attractive. The commute to Uptown is ten to fifteen minutes via Independence or 7th Street.
Central Avenue Corridor
Independent restaurants, dive bars, music venues, vintage shops. Plaza Midwood's social life walks Central Avenue from end to end and most weekends are busy from Friday through Sunday.
Mixed Architecture
Bungalows, mid-century ranches, and newer infill — Plaza Midwood doesn't have one architectural identity, which gives the streets a layered, lived-in quality.
Lived-In Character
Plaza Midwood has gentrified but held more of its original mixed-income, mixed-class fabric than its peer neighborhoods. The result is a neighborhood that doesn't feel curated.
