So as you’ve probably figured out, I LOVE where I live and work… and I love homes and architecture. Well…a few months back I found another place I would “love to live”, figuratively speaking. I had the pleasure of visiting the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. I didn’t even realize it existed until recently. The trip took about 2 hours west from Lake Norman and was by far worth the trip!
The Biltmore Estate is located in the western mountains of North Carolina and sits on 8,000 acres of land! Built by George Washington Vanderbilt between the years of 1889 and 1895, the home was built as a country retreat for family and friends. Still owned by the Vanderbilt’s, this property is the largest private home in America measuring at 178,926 square feet. Glad I didn’t have to measure that one! A walk-through, though… absolutely! The look on my daughter’s face when we pulled up was priceless.
From the grounds to the home, it is all breathtaking. You can take a tour to see everything, from the common living area, to the bedrooms and even the servants quarters. It is at least a day trip. There seems to be an endless list of things to do and see. Touring the house alone will wear you out. The family has preserved the house and makes you feel like you have gone back in time. Want to tour the grounds? Go ahead! Once you’ve paid the admission you are free to explore. You could walk, bike, drive or canoe on the property. The grounds are surround by sunflowers and sprawling gardens. You can even bring your horse. Where can you vacation and they say, “bring your horse”? They have an Equestrian Center on the property, several restaurants, shops, a winery, a petting zoo and because there is so much to see and do, they even have places to rent on the property, both private cottages and a hotel on the grounds. A true American Treasure!
Downton Abbey friends, you are in for a real treat!
